The #1 Person Who Needs to Read Your Book is YOU

Write, Heal and Publish Your Memoir

I’m going to keep this short, because it’s currently almost 1 in the morning and this mama has to get up at 7 and start all over again. But I couldn’t let this week go by without reminding you of the one person that you should be keeping in mind more than anybody else when you write your memoir.

It’s not your kids.

It’s not your partner.

It’s not your future audience or the agent you’re trying to impress.

The #1 person who you should be most concerned with in writing your book is YOU. Why? Because if you don’t believe in your book nobody else will.

If you write for other people first, your message will come off inauthentic and pandering.

“Other” People Don’t Matter

I am not saying that you want to write a diary and bleed all over the page. (Nobody wants to see that!) But what I am saying is that if you let fear of what the big bad “other” will think when they read your book, there will be no “big bad other” to criticize you, because fear will keep you from writing your book in the first place!

Change Your Mindset/Write Your Book

What if the only opinion you cared about most was your own? With that in mind, would the direction of your book change? Would you feel more free to write what is truly on your heart? I think we both know the answer is “Yes.”

In freeing yourself up to write from your authentic soul, it might mean that you alienate a certain demographic. But it will also mean that the right people who desperately need to hear your message will find you.

Before you write your book, remember what you might say to your own child who had fears about going to school for the first time.

You don’t have to be everyone’s friend.

You don’t have to impress the whole world.

But if you stay true to yourself you will have a few very important friends.

And the most important friend of all is no other than you.

Be kind to yourselves, mamas. God didn’t put a gift in your heart to say, “Nah, just kidding.” Decide that you are worth the time to write your book and get started today. It’s the best gift you can give yourself.
